Double Murder of Russian Women in Goa: Accused Arrested

Goa Police have arrested a 37-year-old Russian national, Alexey Leonov, in connection with the brutal killings of two Russian women in North Goa. The victims, identified as Elena Kasthanova (37) and Elina Vaniva (37), were found dead on Thursday and Friday, respectively, with their throats slit and hands tied behind their backs.
The first body, of Kasthanova, who was Leonov’s live-in partner, was discovered late Thursday night in a rented apartment in Arambol. The landlady alerted authorities after hearing screams, prompting a police response. According to investigators, an argument had broken out between the couple on 14 January, escalating to fatal violence. Leonov allegedly fled the scene by jumping from the apartment balcony before committing the second murder.
The second victim, Vaniva, a friend of both the accused and Kasthanova, was found dead on Friday in Morjim village, approximately eight kilometres from the first crime scene. Goa Police noted that the method of killing was similar in both cases, indicating a connection between the incidents.
“The accused has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. We are examining his background, potential motives, and any links to criminal activity,” a senior official from Goa Police said. Police have not disclosed a confirmed motive for the killings but confirmed that the murders have caused alarm in local communities, especially areas frequented by Russian tourists.
Neighbours reported hearing Kasthanova’s screams before Leonov escaped. Police said the couple had been living together in the rented room for around a month. Attempts to intervene by other local residents reportedly failed, allowing the situation to escalate. Authorities have cordoned off relevant areas and are continuing forensic investigations, including examination of the crime scenes and any digital evidence.
The dual murders have raised concerns over safety in tourist-heavy regions of Goa. Police are advising residents and visitors to remain vigilant while investigations continue. Goa Police are also coordinating with Russian authorities regarding the victims and the accused.
This case adds to a series of violent incidents in the state, highlighting the need for heightened security in areas with transient populations and foreign visitors. Authorities have promised swift legal action once the investigation is complete.
