Dr K A Paul Criticises Political Focus on Lionel Messi, Calls for Investment in Indian Youth and Sports

International Peace Maker and social activist Dr K A Paul has sparked  a nationwide debate with his sharp criticism of political leaders and governments over what he described as the misplaced glorification of international sports icons at the cost of India’s youth, athletes, and long-term development.

In a video statement that has gone viral, Dr Paul questioned the political and financial priorities behind the reception accorded to Argentine football star Lionel Messi in India, while alleging neglect of Indian sportspersons and students. Referring to reports of special arrangements and public spending linked to Messi’s visit, Dr Paul described the situation as “a great tragedy for the country”.

Dr Paul alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi travelled on a special flight to meet Messi in Hyderabad and criticised the West Bengal government over reports of an expensive statue worth 18 crore being planned in honour of the footballer. He also targeted Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing him of “worshipping” foreign sports personalities while, according to Dr Paul, failing to fulfil financial commitments towards educational institutions and youth development.

“Why are we spending hundreds of crores to glorify one foreign footballer when our own players struggle for basic facilities?” Dr Paul asked. He said India must invest in its own athletes if it wants to compete globally, pointing to countries like China, Russia, and the United States, which consistently win 50 to 100 Olympic medals by focusing on sports infrastructure and talent development.

Dr Paul further questioned the symbolism of erecting statues for foreign athletes, asking whether such honours should instead be reserved for national icons like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr B R Ambedkar, or Mother Teresa. He described the political display around Messi’s visit as excessive and demeaning, stating that “Indian politicians have lowered their standards by treating a sports celebrity like a divine figure.”

Drawing from his past experiences, Dr Paul recalled hosting international sports legends such as Evander Holyfield , and Mahesh Bhupathi at public events in India during the 1990s. He said those interactions were meant to inspire Indian youth, not to divert public resources or political attention away from domestic priorities.

Raising questions over what he termed “fake agreements” and unfulfilled financial promises to institutions like Osmania University, Dr Paul alleged that such practices were harming India’s future and eroding public trust. “Where is the money that was promised? Has it been transferred?” he asked.

Concluding his remarks, Dr K A Paul called for systemic change and urged citizens to demand accountability from their leaders. “We must focus on our teams, our youth, and our future. Change is needed, and together we can bring that change,” he said, appealing to people to share his message widely.
