EC tightens online voter rules amid allegations; Aadhaar-linked mobile e-sign for addition
Digital Desk
The Election Commission of India (EC) has launched a new 'e-sign' feature on its portal and app, making Aadhaar-linked verification mandatory for adding or deleting names from the voter list.
Applicants could submit forms using mobile number linked to their EPIC (Elector Photo Identity Card) without verifying their identity.
Reported by the Indian Express, aims to ensure that the name on the voter ID matches the name on the Aadhaar card, with the mobile number used also linked to Aadhaar.
Applicants filling Form 6 (new voter registration), Form 7 (objection to inclusion/deletion), and Form 8 (correction) will now need this verification.
Allegations and EC’s response
· August 7: Rahul presented a 22-page report on voter list irregularities, showing suspicious entries in Karnataka and alleging vote theft in Maharashtra. He said EC’s failure to provide machine-readable voter lists confirmed his suspicion of collusion with BJP.
· August 17: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar clarified that the data in Rahul’s presentation did not belong to the EC, urging submission of an affidavit to substantiate allegations or apologize within seven days.
· September 18: Following Rahul’s claims, the EC stated that no voter’s name can be deleted online and that no wrongful deletions occurred in Aland.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, "Gyanesh ji, you remembered to lock the place only after we caught you stealing. Now we will catch the thieves too. So tell us, when are you submitting evidence to the CID?", sharing the report on social media.
Rahul has repeatedly alleged large-scale manipulation of voter lists, illegal additions and deletions, and misuse of institutions in several states.
On September 18, he claimed that over 6,000 votes were deleted from the Aland assembly constituency in Karnataka.
Mobile numbers operating in other states were used to remove names, citing 12 neighbors of Godavai as examples.
On September 20, Rahul said he would soon present evidence proving that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP won elections through vote theft. He termed it a 'hydrogen bomb', claiming he had open-and-shut evidence.
EC’s E-sign feature
The new e-sign system ensures identity verification for all voter list changes, adding an extra layer of security.
The Commission has not yet released official guidelines regarding its implementation but aims to prevent fraudulent changes in the electoral rolls.
