Four AAP MLAs Suspended from Delhi Assembly Over Pollution Protest

Four Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs were suspended from the Delhi Assembly for three days on Monday after creating a ruckus during Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s address on the first day of the Winter Session. The suspension followed repeated disruptions by the MLAs, who were protesting against the rising air pollution in the national capital.

The suspended legislators are Sanjay Jha, Somdatt, Kuldeep Kumar, and Jarnail Singh. During the LG’s speech, they shouted slogans highlighting the worsening air quality in Delhi, prompting Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta to order marshals to escort them out of the house. The commotion delayed the proceedings and drew widespread attention.

Following the interruption, PWD Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh moved a proposal to suspend the four MLAs for the remaining three days of the session. The house approved the motion, with Speaker Gupta stating that the MLAs’ conduct “insulted both the house and the Lieutenant Governor.”

AAP MLA Sanjay Jha described the suspension as a punitive action for raising a critical public health issue. The party has consistently emphasized air pollution as a key concern affecting Delhi residents, citing rising respiratory illnesses and deteriorating environmental conditions.

Meanwhile, the Assembly passed a procedural change to advance the session’s proceedings from 2 PM to 11 AM, a move expected to streamline legislative business.

In his address, LG VK Saxena outlined the government’s priorities, including health, education, infrastructure, and cleaning of the Yamuna River. Acknowledging that air pollution remains a “serious issue,” he highlighted the launch of a year-long Air Pollution Control Plan in June 2025 and said new sewage treatment plants are under construction while existing facilities are being upgraded to improve the Yamuna’s condition. Saxena also stressed that eliminating long-standing administrative inertia and a negative mindset remains the biggest challenge for the Delhi government.

The Winter Session, which commenced on Monday, is expected to deliberate on multiple policy measures, including public welfare schemes, environmental initiatives, and infrastructure projects. The suspension of the four AAP MLAs is likely to add a political dimension to discussions in the coming days, particularly around the issue of air pollution, which has become a recurring point of contention between the ruling BJP and the opposition AAP.

The disruption underscores ongoing tensions within the Assembly as lawmakers continue to debate accountability and environmental action in India’s capital, highlighting the urgency of tackling Delhi’s persistent air quality crisis.
