IAS officer in Telangana asked students to clean toilets, uproar over officer's instructions; SC/ST Commission sent notice

The controversy is increasing in the case of alleged objectionable remarks made against the students of SC Gurukul schools in Telangana. The National Scheduled Caste Commission has taken cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of the state. The Commission has sought to submit an action report within 15 days on the complaint received against IAS officer Dr. VS Alagu Varshini.

Dr. Alagu Varshini, Secretary of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS), has come into controversy due to an audio clip. In this viral clip, she has instructed the students of Gurukul schools to clean the toilets and hostel rooms. This incident is said to be about a week old.

She says in the audio that the students should clean their rooms themselves and also why they cannot clean their toilets. He made it clear that these students are not from well-off families where they get everything easily. Apart from this, he stressed the importance of self-reliance, stating that after leaving school, they will have to do their daily chores themselves.

'Do something, people are being deported from Assam to Bangladesh overnight', Supreme Court refuses to hear, says - go to High Court

Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader and former secretary of TGSWREIS Dr. R. S. Praveen Kumar reacted sharply to the Chief Minister's statement and questioned whether his children also clean the bathrooms in the same school where they study. He termed this order as discriminatory towards Dalit students and demanded the dismissal of the concerned officer.

BRS MLC and former MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha launched a scathing attack on the Congress government by sharing an audio clip on X. He said that the anti-poor attitude of the Congress government is clearly visible in the behavior of this officer. Kavitha also alleged that during the BRS regime, every school was given Rs 40,000 per month for the temporary appointment of cleaning staff, but the Congress government has abolished this system since May.

Kavitha's allegation

Kavitha said that assistant wardens have been removed from 240 Gurukul schools in the state, due to which students have to do the kitchen and cleaning work themselves. She termed it against the rights and dignity of children and said that this situation promotes caste discrimination and exploitation.

IAS officer clarified

IAS officer Varshini, in an audio message, requested the media not to see her statement from a political point of view and not to take it out of context. She termed the allegation of shortage of cleaning staff as baseless. Varshini clarified that helping parents at home is part of the normal routine of children, which makes them self-reliant. Along with this, she also said that when going abroad or studying in other states, children have to get used to doing their own work, such as cleaning the room and washing clothes. This change is a process for children, which takes time to adopt.
