India Ends Boarding Pass Stamping at Airports From September 1

International passengers departing from India will no longer need to get their boarding passes stamped at immigration counters from September 1. The Bureau of Immigration has introduced the change to simplify departure procedures, reduce paperwork and make immigration clearance more convenient for travellers.

Under the revised system, passengers can present an electronic boarding pass on their smartphones during immigration clearance. Printed boarding passes will also continue to be accepted, but immigration officials will no longer stamp them.

Boarding Pass Stamping Ends

The Bureau of Immigration, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has communicated the revised procedure to airport authorities and other stakeholders, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The earlier system required international passengers to present their boarding passes at immigration, where an officer would stamp the document. The practice will now end at international airports across the country.

The decision is aimed at removing an additional physical step from the departure process and supporting the wider digitisation of airport services.

E-Boarding Passes Accepted

International travellers can now display their boarding passes on their mobile phones at immigration counters.

This means passengers who receive an e-boarding pass from their airline do not need to print a copy solely for immigration clearance.

However, travellers who prefer paper documents can still carry a physical boarding pass. It will remain valid for immigration purposes but will no longer receive an immigration stamp.

Why Immigration Rule Changed

Officials said the earlier stamping procedure had caused inconvenience to passengers. There were also instances in which boarding passes became difficult to read because of improper or incorrect stamping.

The Bureau of Immigration therefore decided to remove the mandatory requirement for physical boarding passes and immigration stamping, while continuing to allow printed passes where required.

What Travellers Should Know

The change applies to international passengers departing from Indian airports. It does not mean that immigration formalities have been removed.

Travellers must continue to complete the applicable immigration and security procedures before proceeding to the departure area. The main change is that the boarding pass no longer needs an immigration stamp.

Passengers should also keep their boarding pass readily accessible, whether it is stored digitally on a smartphone or carried as a printed document.

CISF Stamping Already Stopped

The new measure should not be confused with security checks conducted by the CISF.

Officials have clarified that CISF personnel had already stopped stamping boarding passes during passenger frisking at airports several years ago. The latest decision concerns the separate stamping procedure carried out by immigration authorities for international departures.

Fast Track Flyers Get Digital Option

Travellers enrolled in the Fast Track Immigration–Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) can also use e-boarding passes at designated e-gates.

The programme uses biometric technology to speed up immigration clearance for eligible travellers. The acceptance of digital boarding passes is part of the broader push towards faster and more paperless airport processing.

More Digital Changes Ahead

The end of boarding pass stamping is another step towards reducing physical paperwork at Indian airports.

Officials have also indicated that the Bureau of Immigration is working on a separate proposal to eliminate immigration entry and exit stamping on the passports of Indian citizens. A pilot exercise is being considered before any wider rollout.

For international travellers, the immediate change from September 1 is straightforward: show an e-boarding pass or present a physical one, complete immigration clearance and proceed without waiting for a boarding-pass stamp.
