India Energy Week 2026 inaugurated; PM Modi pitches India as global energy hub, highlights India-EU trade deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday virtually inaugurated the fourth edition of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, positioning India as one of the world’s most promising destinations for energy investment as domestic demand surges and structural reforms gather pace.

Addressing the global gathering, Modi said India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, offers vast opportunities across the energy value chain. He noted that rising consumption, expanding infrastructure and policy stability are driving sustained demand for energy products, while also creating space for India to contribute to global energy security.

Highlighting recent trade diplomacy, the Prime Minister underscored the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, describing it as a transformational pact that complements the India–UK trade deal. Referred to as the “Mother of All Deals,” the agreement covers nearly 25 per cent of global GDP and about one-third of global trade. Modi said the pact would strengthen India’s manufacturing base, expand the services sector and generate opportunities for India’s 1.4 billion citizens as well as millions across Europe, while reinforcing shared democratic values and the rule of law.

India Energy Week 2026, being held in Goa until January 30, is among the world’s largest energy forums. The three-day event is bringing together over 75,000 energy professionals, more than 700 exhibitors and over 550 expert speakers from across the globe. The conference features more than 120 sessions, 12 international country pavilions and 11 thematic zones, covering areas such as oil and gas, renewable energy, hydrogen, biofuels, electrification, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and net-zero transition pathways.87

Outlining India’s energy ambitions, Modi said the government is targeting up to $100 billion in investment in the oil and gas sector by the end of this decade. He noted that India is already among the world’s top five exporters of petroleum products, supplying more than 150 countries, and is on track to become the largest global refining hub. Refining capacity, he said, is expected to rise from 260 million metric tonnes to 300 million metric tonnes in the coming years.

The Prime Minister also pointed to broader reforms aimed at attracting long-term capital, estimating that investment opportunities worth nearly $500 billion are opening up across the energy sector. He said such reforms, coupled with trade agreements with the EU, the UK and EFTA nations, are boosting investor confidence and integrating India more deeply into global supply chains.

With geopolitical uncertainty and the energy transition reshaping global markets, Modi said India’s scale, growth trajectory and policy clarity position it as a reliable partner in meeting future energy needs.
