India Successfully Tests Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket, DRDO Confirms 120 km Accuracy

India on Monday successfully conducted the first flight test of the Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha. The rocket, part of the indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher system, was fired to its full range of 120 kilometres, hitting the designated target with precision.

The test was overseen by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and closely monitored by multiple tracking systems along the range. According to officials, the rocket executed all pre-determined in-flight manoeuvres flawlessly, confirming its readiness for operational deployment.

The trial coincided with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, where the induction of the LRGR-120 into the Indian Army was approved. The DAC also cleared procurement proposals worth ₹79,000 crore, including missiles, rockets, radar systems, and the Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (MK-II) for the Army.

The Pinaka system, designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), with contributions from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI), is mounted on a truck and can fire multiple rockets in rapid succession. The successful test demonstrated that rockets of varying ranges can be launched from existing Pinaka launchers without modification.

“The successful flight test of the long-range guided rockets is a major milestone in enhancing the precision strike capabilities of the Indian Army,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, congratulating DRDO teams. DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat also praised the engineers and scientists involved for completing the mission successfully.

Pinaka is recognized for its speed, accuracy, and rapid-fire capabilities, aided by GPS-based navigation. Each launcher vehicle carries 12 rocket tubes, enabling concentrated strikes on enemy targets from long distances. The system has already found international recognition, with Armenia inducting Pinaka, and several European nations, including France, showing interest in procurement.

The successful LRGR-120 test marks a significant step in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous defence capabilities, enhance operational readiness, and reduce dependence on foreign weaponry. With this, the Indian Army will be equipped with a long-range precision strike system, capable of engaging high-value targets with enhanced accuracy.
