Indian National Congress Leads Early in Telangana Civic Poll Trends, Bharat Rashtra Samithi Trails

Early counting trends in Telangana’s municipal elections on Friday placed the Congress party in a commanding position, leading in 1,132 wards across the state, while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was ahead in 611 wards and the Bharatiya Janata Party stood third with leads in 199 wards, according to preliminary figures released by officials.

The trends emerged as counting progressed in 2,996 wards spanning seven municipal corporations and 116 municipalities. Election authorities said the process began at 8 a.m., and by around 10 a.m. names of several winning candidates had begun to emerge as ward-wise results were compiled. Certificates were issued to victorious contestants soon after confirmation of their results.

Polling for the local bodies took place on Wednesday, covering 414 wards in the corporations of Kothagudem, Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Nizamabad, Nalgonda and Ramagundam, along with 2,582 wards in municipalities. Officials stated that elaborate security arrangements were made at counting centres, with personnel deployed to maintain order and ensure transparency throughout the process.

Authorities confirmed that the counting procedure is being conducted strictly in line with guidelines of the Election Commission of India. Postal ballots are also being tabulated simultaneously, with dedicated counting tables set up in locations such as Wardhannapet and Narsampet. Results are being declared ward by ward as each round concludes.

The newly elected councillors and corporators are scheduled to take their oath of office at 11:30 a.m. on February 16. Following the ceremony, special meetings will be convened to elect mayors and deputy mayors in municipal corporations, as well as chairpersons and vice-chairpersons in municipalities, officials said.

Before counting began, state BJP president N. Ramchander Rao had expressed confidence that his party would secure a strong mandate and improve on its previous tally of municipal representatives. He said the BJP aimed to position itself as a viable alternative to the Congress in the state’s political landscape.

Political observers note that municipal results often serve as indicators of public sentiment ahead of larger electoral contests. While trends may shift as counting continues, the early lead suggests Congress has made significant gains in urban local bodies, a development likely to influence political calculations across Telangana in the coming months.
