Indian nurse Nimisha, imprisoned in Yemen since 2017, is facing the death penalty. Efforts are underway to save her life through 'blood money' negotiations with the victim's family under Yemeni law.
Indian nurse Nimisha Priya from Kerala will be hanged in Yemen. Nimisha Priya will be hanged on 16 July in the case of murder of a Yemeni citizen. Last year, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi approved her death sentence. Nimisha has been in jail since 2017. The Indian government is keeping an eye on this matter and is in constant touch with local authorities and Nimisha's family.
Efforts are also being made to save Indian nurse Nimisha Priya through 'blood money'. However, the victim's family has not yet accepted 'blood money'.
In fact, 19-year-old Nimisha Priya, a resident of Palakkad, Kerala, reached Yemen in 2008 for a job. She got a job as a nurse in a government hospital in the capital Sanaa. In 2011, Nimisha returned to India for marriage. She married Tommy Thomas, a resident of Kochi, and both came to Yemen. Here Thomas got a job as an electrician's assistant, but the salary was very low. In 2012, Nimisha gave birth to a daughter, Mishal, but it became difficult to make ends meet in Yemen. In 2014, Thomas returned to Kochi with the daughter.
Nimisha decided to leave her low-paying job and open a clinic, but according to Yemen's law, Nimisha needed a local partner. During this time, Nimisha met Mahdi, who runs a clothes shop. Nimisha had helped Mahdi's wife deliver her baby. To start the clinic, Nimisha raised about 50 lakh rupees from family and friends and reached Yemen and started the clinic.
In 2016, Mahdi started physically abusing Nimisha. He also grabbed the profit of Nimisha's clinic. When Nimisha questioned him about this, their relationship deteriorated. Mahdi did not want to let Nimisha go out of Yemen, so he kept Nimisha's passport with him. Nimisha also filed a complaint against Mahdi with the police, but the police took Nimisha into custody for 6 days, because Mahdi showed an edited photo and claimed to be Nimisha's husband.
Nimisha gave an overdose of drugs, which led to Mahdi's death
Nimisha was very upset. In July 2017, to get the passport from Mahdi, Nimisha gave him an injection to make him unconscious, but it did not work. Then Nimisha gave an overdose to Mahdi, which led to his death. According to media reports, Nimisha cut Mahdi's body into pieces and threw it in the water tank. After this, the police arrested Nimisha. Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council sentenced Nimisha to death for the murder of Mahdi. Nimisha filed an appeal for pardon in the Supreme Court of Yemen, which was rejected in 2023. President Rashad also approved the sentence on 30 December 2024.
Attempt to save Nimisha through blood money as well
According to Sharia law, the victim's side has the right to decide the punishment of the criminals. There is a death sentence in case of murder, but the victim's family can forgive the culprit by taking money. This is called 'Diya' or 'Blood Money', which is also mentioned in the Quran. To get Nimisha pardoned, her mother also tried to raise 'blood money' by selling her property and through crowdfunding. In 2020, 'Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council' was formed to save Nimisha from punishment and collect blood money. A well-known businessman from Kerala had announced to donate Rs 1 crore to save Nimisha.
