Indian Railways to Roll Out AI-Based Reservation System From August
The Indian Railways reservation system is set for a major overhaul as the Centre prepares to shift trains to a new AI-enabled Passenger Reservation System from August. The upgraded platform aims to improve ticket booking capacity and sharply increase waiting list prediction accuracy.
The Indian Railways is preparing to replace its four-decade-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a new technology-driven platform that will use artificial intelligence to predict whether waitlisted tickets are likely to get confirmed.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the upgraded system during a meeting with railway officials earlier this week and directed departments to begin shifting trains to the new module from August. Officials said the transition will be carried out in phases to avoid disruption to passengers.
Reservation System Upgrade
The existing PRS was introduced in 1986 and has remained the backbone of railway ticketing operations for nearly 40 years. While incremental updates were added over time, railway authorities now say the scale of online ticketing demand requires a complete technological overhaul.
According to officials familiar with the project, the new reservation architecture has been designed to handle significantly higher booking loads while improving real-time data processing and passenger services.
The Railways said nearly 88% of ticket demand in the country is now fulfilled through online platforms, marking a sharp shift from counter-based reservations to app and mobile-based booking.
AI To Predict Confirmation
One of the key features of the new system is AI-powered prediction of waiting list confirmations.
Railway officials said the current prediction accuracy for waitlisted tickets stands at around 53%. Under the upgraded system, AI models are expected to raise that accuracy to nearly 94%, allowing passengers to get a clearer picture of confirmation chances while booking tickets.
Officials indicated that the prediction engine analyses historical booking trends, cancellations, route demand, seasonal movement and train occupancy patterns before generating confirmation estimates.
The move is expected to particularly benefit passengers travelling during festivals, holidays and peak migration periods when waitlists often stretch into triple digits.
RailOne App Expansion
The upgraded reservation push also comes alongside the expansion of the RailOne mobile application, which the Railways launched in July last year.
According to railway data, the app has crossed 3.5 crore downloads within a year. Of these, more than 3.16 crore downloads came through Android devices, while over 33 lakh users downloaded it on iOS.
Officials said the platform is gradually being positioned as an integrated railway services application.
Daily Ticket Volume Rising
Railways data shows that nearly 9.29 lakh tickets are booked daily through the RailOne app. This includes around 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets, including platform tickets, and over 2 lakh reserved tickets every day.
Besides reservation and cancellation facilities, passengers can also access live train tracking, platform information, coach positions and complaint support services through the app.
Food ordering services linked to onboard seat delivery have also been integrated into the platform.
Transition From August
During the review meeting at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, Vaishnaw reportedly instructed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during the migration from the old reservation system.
Sources said the shift to the upgraded PRS will happen gradually, with select trains likely to be moved first before wider implementation across zones.
Railway officials maintained that the transition is intended to remain “smooth and transparent” without affecting daily ticket bookings.
Ticket Subsidy Figures
The Railways also shared updated subsidy data for passenger fares during the review process.
According to official figures, Indian Railways provided a subsidy of Rs 60,239 crore on passenger tickets during the financial year 2024-25.
Officials said this effectively translates into an average fare concession of around 43% for passengers. In practical terms, the Railways spends nearly Rs 100 to provide services while recovering only about Rs 57 from passengers through ticket fares.
Push Towards Digital Railways
The upcoming AI-based reservation system reflects the government’s broader push toward digital railway operations and automated passenger services.
With online bookings continuing to rise sharply, railway authorities believe the new reservation infrastructure could reduce uncertainty around waitlisted tickets and improve the overall booking experience for millions of passengers across the country.
The phased rollout of the Indian Railways reservation system is expected to begin in August, with further expansion likely over the following months.
