According to sources, this action is against those who were taking undue advantage of tax exemption by making fake bills.
The department had received complaints that many people were trying to save tax through fake bills. These include fraud in the name of political donations as well as medical expenses and tuition fees. This game was especially going on in big cities, where people were evading taxes using their influence.
Under Section 80GGC of the Income Tax Act, tax exemption is available on donations made to political parties or electoral trusts. But sources said that many middlemen misused this exemption. These people used to make fake bills by taking 5 to 10 percent commission, through which taxpayers claimed tax deduction.
This fraud was not limited to political donations only. Many people were also evading tax by making fake bills in the name of tuition fees and medical expenses. The department has started raids across the country to expose this fraud.
