External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow on Monday during his two-day visit to Russia. Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and a personal message to the Russian leader.
The high-level meeting came against the backdrop of efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to further strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership.
Economic Cooperation Expands
Jaishankar told Putin that economic cooperation between India and Russia had grown “very significantly”. He was in Moscow to co-chair the 27th session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation.
Putin also highlighted the recent rise in bilateral trade, signalling continued momentum in the economic relationship between the two countries.
Trade And Energy Discussed
Trade and energy remained key areas of discussion during the meetings. The two sides also discussed fertiliser supplies and cooperation in the nuclear energy sector.
For India, stable access to energy and fertilisers remains important, while Russia continues to view India as a major economic and strategic partner in Asia.
Strategic Ties Remain Strong
India and Russia share decades of cooperation across defence, energy, space, nuclear technology and other strategic sectors.
The latest Jaishankar-Putin engagement comes at a time of major geopolitical changes. Both countries continue to maintain regular high-level diplomatic contact while pursuing greater economic cooperation.
Modi-Putin Meeting Expected
The meeting also comes ahead of expected further engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Putin.
The two leaders are likely to have opportunities for direct discussions at upcoming multilateral meetings, where they could review bilateral ties as well as major regional and international developments.
Moscow Visit Gains Importance
Jaishankar's visit began on August 23 at the invitation of Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. The visit includes meetings focused on expanding cooperation across trade, investment, technology, energy and other sectors.
The minister's discussions are also expected to help prepare the ground for future high-level engagements between the two countries.
India-Russia Ties Ahead
The Jaishankar-Putin meeting underlined the continued importance both countries attach to their strategic relationship.
With economic cooperation gaining greater prominence alongside traditional areas such as defence and energy, New Delhi and Moscow are expected to pursue new opportunities in trade, technology, investment and industrial cooperation.
