JNU Delivers Diplomatic Blow to Turkey After Operation Sindoor
MoU with Turkish University Suspended Amid Rising Tensions
In a significant move following Operation Sindoor, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its Memorandum of Understanding with a prominent Turkish university. The decision comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions, as Turkey continues to voice support for Pakistan.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. While both countries have announced a ceasefire, the situation is still not under control. Meanwhile, Turkey announced its support to Pakistan, in response to which Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its MoU with Turkey's Inonu University. JNU has cited national security as the basis for this decision and shared information in this regard through social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
JNU wrote this in the tweet
JNU has tweeted giving information about canceling the MoU with Turkey's Inonu University. The university said that keeping in mind the security of the country, this agreement is being suspended till further orders. JNU also made it clear that it stands firmly with its country and used the #NationFirst hashtag in this context.
After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor against the terrorists hiding in Pakistan. Turkey expressed displeasure over this and supported Pakistan, which caused outrage among the citizens of India. Many people have canceled their bookings in Turkey.
According to the JNU website, this agreement was signed on 3 February 2025 for three years, which was to remain in effect till 3 February 2028. However, JNU has suspended it in view of the security of the country. This decision was taken when the government banned the X account of Turkish news broadcaster TRT World in India, as this channel was broadcasting misinformation against India. As a result, protests against Turkish products and services have started increasing in the country.
