Landlord’s son held in Maharashtra doctor’s suicide case: 4-page note names MP and two aides

The police have made the first arrest in the suicide case of a doctor who committed suicide at a hotel in Phaltan in Satara, Maharashtra. The police have arrested Prashant Banker, son of the doctor's landlord.

Prashant has been booked for rape and abetment to suicide. He was later produced in court which remanded him in police custody for four days.

The doctor committed suicide on October 23. In a note written on his hand, he has accused software engineer Prashant Banker of mentally harassing him.

The name of Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne was also written on the palm. It is alleged that Badne raped the doctor 4 times in the last 5 months. Badne was also pressuring the accused to make fake fitness certificates.

Sampada wrote, 'Two PAs of MP came to the hospital'

A case of rape and abetment to suicide has also been registered against Gopal Badne. CM Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the SP of Satara to suspend the accused sub-inspector. The woman doctor hailed from Beed district and worked at a government hospital in Phaltan tehsil.

The police have found another 4-page suicide note. In which there is the name of an MP and his two PAs. It is alleged that these people were pressuring the doctor to make fake fitness certificates of the accused. On refusal, the MP called the female doctor.

The doctor wrote in the suicide note that two personal assistants of the MP had come to the hospital. Both of them pressured him to issue fake fitness certificates of the accused related to other cases. The accused also asked to issue fitness certificates to those who did not come to the hospital. When I refused to do so, I had to talk to the MP on the phone.

Relatives claim - There was pressure to change the post-mortem report

Sampada's relative said - she was being pressured to change the post-mortem report and manipulate the medical reports of the arrested accused.

The doctor's cousin said that Sampada had complained to the Satara SP and DSP in this matter, but no action was taken. She had written in the letter - if something happened to her, who would take responsibility.

Another relative said-Sampada was under work stress and seniors used to harass her. She had previously complained to her senior doctors about this matter and the problems she was facing with the police. She had complained about the mistreatment she was receiving. She had also said that if her concerns were not heard, she would commit suicide.

Hotel staff opened the door with a duplicate key

SP Doshi said that the doctor had taken a room in a hotel in Phaltan. When the staff knocked on the door, there was no response. Suspecting something, the door was opened with another key, and she was found hanging. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Who said what in the doctor's suicide case...?

  • Minister Pankaja Munde said that there should be no media trial in this case, and the investigation should be fair and based on forensic evidence. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare has demanded an investigation by an independent SIT.
  • BJP leader Chitra Wagh called the incident unfortunate and said that a detailed investigation into the matter would be conducted. The government is ready to provide all possible help. All women are urged to immediately register a complaint on the 112 helpline in such a situation.
  • Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government of protecting the police. He also asked, "When the protectors themselves become predators, who will provide justice?" The doctor had complained before, so why was no action taken?
