Landslide Hits Army Camp in Sikkim: 3 Soldiers Dead, 6 Missing; Rain-Flood Toll Reaches 37 in Northeast

A major landslide struck a military camp in the Chatten area of Sikkim around 7 PM on Sunday. The incident led to the death of three army personnel, while six others remain missing. Rescue teams promptly responded and managed to safely extricate four soldiers from the debris, who sustained minor injuries.
Martyrs Identified
In a statement issued by the Indian Army on Monday, the deceased have been identified as Havildar Lakhbinder Singh, Lance Naik Manish Thakur, and porter Abhishek Lakhara. A large-scale search operation is ongoing to locate the six missing personnel.
Tourists Also Being Rescued
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 tourists stranded since May 30 in the Lachen and Lachung regions of Sikkim have been rescued and moved to safer locations.
Widespread Destruction in the Northeast
The situation is grim not only in Sikkim but across the entire northeastern region due to continuous heavy rainfall for the past four days, causing floods and landslides. So far, 37 people have lost their lives — including 10 in Assam, 9 in Arunachal Pradesh, 5 in Mizoram, and 6 in Meghalaya.
Military and Relief Agencies in Action
The Indian Army, Air Force, and Assam Rifles are actively engaged in relief and rescue efforts. In Assam, over 3.64 lakh people have been affected by floods. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger mark.
Situation in Other States Also Worrisome
In Manipur, over 19,000 people have been impacted and 3,365 houses damaged by floods. In Tripura, more than 10,000 people are affected. In Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, authorities ordered the closure of all schools on June 2 due to ongoing rainfall. Since May 30, the state has reported 211 landslides.
Northern India Also Reeling from Weather Chaos
Meanwhile, heavy rain alerts have been issued for 30 districts in Rajasthan and 50 in Madhya Pradesh. In Bihar’s Vaishali district, a 60-year-old woman died when her house collapsed due to a thunderstorm and heavy rain on Sunday evening. Warnings for storms and rain have been issued in nine districts of Bihar.
