Man Attempts to Attack Police Officer with Knife in Tamil Nadu, Arrested in Tiruppur

A tense situation unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district on Wednesday after a young man allegedly attempted to attack a police officer with a knife during crowd control arrangements for the Swargavasa festival. The accused was swiftly overpowered and arrested by the police. A video of the incident, recorded by bystanders, surfaced on social media and has since gone viral.

According to police officials, the incident occurred while personnel were deployed to regulate crowds during the festival, which typically draws a large public turnout. The accused, who was reportedly intoxicated, began arguing with on-duty police personnel over crowd management instructions. During the altercation, he suddenly pulled out a knife and attempted to assault a police officer identified as Ramakrishnan.

Witnesses said the officer reacted quickly, stepping back and using his belt to defend himself as the accused lunged forward. The youth then began brandishing the knife, threatening both the police and members of the public present at the spot, triggering panic among the crowd.

Senior officers said additional personnel stationed nearby intervened within moments, preventing the situation from escalating further. The accused was restrained, disarmed and taken into custody without any injuries being reported. He was later shifted to a local police station for questioning.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused is a resident of Thanjavur district. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempting to attack a public servant on duty, criminal intimidation and causing public disorder.

Officials said further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused had any prior criminal record and how he managed to carry a weapon into a public gathering. Police are also examining the viral video footage to corroborate witness accounts and assess the sequence of events.

The Tiruppur police have reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone who threatens public safety or obstructs law enforcement personnel performing their duties. Additional security measures were put in place at the festival venue following the incident to prevent any further disturbances.

Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with police during religious and cultural events, stressing that crowd control measures are implemented to ensure safety. They have also urged people not to circulate unverified or misleading clips on social media, warning that doing so could create unnecessary panic.
