Meitei Community Man Shot Dead in Manipur; Police Probe Possible Relationship Angle

A 38-year-old man from the Meitei community was abducted and shot dead in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, triggering fresh tension and protests in parts of the state. The victim, identified as Mayanglambam Rishikant, a resident of Kakching Khunou, was killed on the night of January 21, police officials said on Thursday.

According to preliminary investigations, Rishikant was picked up by unknown assailants from the Tuibuong area and later taken to T Natjang village, where he was shot at close range. A video of the killing, allegedly recorded by the attackers themselves, has surfaced and is now part of the police investigation. In the footage, the accused are seen speaking to the victim in the local language. Rishikant is seen apologising with folded hands moments before he is shot near the head.

Police have registered a murder case and launched a manhunt, but all the accused remain absconding. While initial claims suggest the killing may be linked to an alleged relationship with a tribal woman, officials have cautioned against speculation. “We are examining all possible angles, including personal motives, but no conclusion has been drawn so far,” a senior police officer said, adding that the authenticity and context of the video are being verified.

The victim’s family has raised serious allegations. Rishikant’s sister, Asha Lata, told reporters that her brother had been working in Nepal and had returned only after receiving a call from the woman in question. She claimed that Rishikant had not maintained contact with her since ethnic violence erupted in the state in 2023. The family suspects the woman’s involvement, though police have not responded to these claims.

Following the killing, protests erupted in Kakching district on Thursday. Demonstrators blocked the Imphal–Sugnu road in Kakching Khunou, leading to traffic disruptions for several hours. Civil society group COCOMI condemned the murder and alleged the involvement of Kuki militants, a claim that police have not officially confirmed.

The incident comes against the backdrop of prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which began in May 2023 and continued into early 2025. The unrest resulted in widespread arson, displacement, and loss of life across the state. After the resignation of then chief minister N Biren Singh in February 2025, President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur and has since been extended until February 2026.

Security has been tightened in sensitive areas as investigations continue. Authorities have appealed for calm, assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.
