Mohanlal Mittal, Father of Steel Tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, Passes Away at 99; PM Modi, Leaders Express Condolences

Mohanlal Mittal, father of ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, passed away peacefully on January 15 in London at the age of 99, surrounded by family. Known for his hard work, deep faith, and philanthropic contributions, Mittal’s death marks the end of an era in Indian industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss, noting Mittal’s distinction in business and his dedication to Indian culture. Modi wrote, “I will cherish our various interactions. My condolences to the bereaved family.” Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also paid tribute, calling Mittal a visionary industrialist whose courage and social service would inspire future generations.

Lakshmi Mittal described his father as “an extraordinary person” whose perseverance and faith shaped the family’s success. Born in Rajgarh, Rajasthan, into a modest household, Mohanlal Mittal valued hard work from a young age. His son recalled, “Despite achieving global success, he remained grounded and deeply committed to family and relationships. He celebrated every moment of life with us and stayed involved in all our milestones.”

Mohanlal Mittal is survived by five children, their spouses, 11 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Lakshmi Mittal highlighted his father’s warmth and guidance, saying, “We all loved him deeply. We will miss him greatly and honour his long, inspiring life and legacy.”

Rajasthan BJP leader Satish Poonia also expressed sorrow, highlighting Mittal’s journey from Sadulpur town in Churu district to a global industrial figure. He described Mittal’s death as “the end of an era in the industrial world.”

Lakshmi Mittal, India’s 12th richest person, owns ArcelorMittal, the world’s second-largest steel company, with a net worth of approximately ₹1.8 lakh crore. He moved to London in 1995, establishing himself as one of the UK’s leading Indian business figures. In 2019, he partnered with Japan’s Nippon Steel to acquire Essar Steel in a ₹59,000 crore deal. Although he handed over the CEO role to his son Aditya Mittal in 2021, he continues as executive chairman.

Mittal owns multiple properties in London’s exclusive Kensington Palace Gardens, including the renowned “Taj Mittal.” Reports indicate that while London remains his main base, he is relocating aspects of his operations to Dubai and Switzerland for tax planning purposes.

Mohanlal Mittal’s legacy is remembered for combining business acumen with strong family values and philanthropy, leaving a lasting impact on India’s industrial and social landscape.
