Monsoon to Arrive Early: Good News for Farmers
The Meteorological Department brings a ray of hope for farmers with its latest update—monsoon is expected to arrive ahead of schedule this year
A good news has come out for farmers across the country. Monsoon is expected to arrive at least five days before the scheduled time. The Meteorological Department said that monsoon rains are expected on the southern coast of India on May 27.
The early arrival of the monsoon has increased the hope of bumper yield of crops like rice, maize and soybean. Every year the monsoon arrives on the southern coast on June 1, which reaches the whole country around July 10.
Monsoon is the lifeline of the Indian economy
Let us inform you that the monsoon, the lifeline of the country's $ 4 trillion economy, provides India with about 70% of the rain needed to water the fields and recharge aquifers and reservoirs.
About half of India's cultivable land depends on the annual June-September rains to grow many crops, without any irrigation cover. Meanwhile, the news of the monsoon hitting the southern coast early is going to be quite a relief.
Monsoon arrives on June 1 every year
Let us tell you that summer rains usually start on the southernmost coasts of Kerala state around June 1 and spread across the country by mid-July. The timely arrival of monsoon starts the sowing of crops like rice, maize, cotton, soybean and sugarcane.
The India Meteorological Department said on Saturday that the monsoon is likely to start in Kerala on May 27. Last year, the monsoon reached the coast of Kerala on May 30 and overall summer rainfall was the highest since 2020. The India Meteorological Department last month forecast above-average monsoon rains for the second consecutive year in 2025.
