Uttar Pradesh Police have registered an FIR after a Hindu Class 12 student alleged that she was coerced by five Muslim classmates into wearing a burqa and pressured to convert to Islam in Moradabad’s Billari town. The incident, which reportedly occurred on December 20, came to light after the victim’s brother lodged a formal complaint on January 22.
According to the complaint, the student was returning from coaching classes when the five girls—who study in the same school and attend the same tuition—allegedly surrounded her in a residential lane. One of them reportedly took a burqa from her bag and forced the girl to wear it, allegedly telling her that accepting Islam would change her destiny and enhance her appearance.
Police confirmed that all individuals involved are minors, aged between 16 and 18. CCTV footage from the area has surfaced and is being examined as part of the investigation. The incident took place in Shahkunj Colony under the Billari police station limits.
The victim’s brother told police that his sister had been friends with the accused girls since Class 11 and that they lived in the same neighbourhood. “Over time, they began influencing her, asking her to leave Hinduism and accept Islam,” he alleged in his complaint. He further claimed that his sister’s behaviour changed after an earlier outing with the group, though these claims are yet to be verified by investigators.
The complainant also alleged a wider conspiracy and demanded a thorough probe, claiming organised attempts at religious conversion. Police have not corroborated these claims and stated that all allegations will be examined strictly on evidence.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Kunwar Akash said, “A case has been registered based on the complaint received. The matter is under investigation, and further action will be taken based on facts that emerge.”
The incident has triggered reactions from local Hindu organisations, which have demanded strict action and safeguards to prevent alleged religious coercion in educational spaces. Authorities, however, have urged restraint and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed.
Police officials said statements of all parties, including parents and school authorities, will be recorded. Child welfare officials may also be involved, given that all those named in the case are minors.
The investigation remains ongoing.
