The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to formally elect Bihar minister Nitin Nabin as its new national president by January 20, marking a generational shift with the 45-year-old becoming the youngest leader to hold the post.
Sources said the organisational election process will commence after January 15, with state presidents summoned to Delhi. The formalities are expected to wrap up between January 18 and 20.
Nabin, currently the party's national working president since December 14, is the sole candidate. State units—29 of 37 have completed internal polls—will file nominations in his favour, backed by National Council members.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to sign the papers. Chief election officer K Laxman will declare Nabin elected after scrutiny.
A five-term MLA from Bankipur in Patna and former road construction minister, Nabin brings strong organisational experience from his youth wing days.
His elevation signals a push for younger leadership, with plans to fill 80% of key posts with leaders under 50 ahead of upcoming assembly polls.
Observers note parallels to Nitin Gadkari's 2009 surprise appointment, sidelining senior contenders in a RSS-backed move.
Incumbent JP Nadda, on extension since his term ended, will hand over reins as Nabin's tenure begins, potentially running to 2029 with possible extension.
The change reinforces the party's focus on fresh energy while maintaining consensus-driven transitions.
