No More Toll Booth Hassles From May 1: India to Roll Out High-Tech ANPR-Based Tolling Nationwide
Special News
A major transformation is coming to Indian highways starting May 1, 2025.
The central government is set to implement the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system across the country—bringing an end to long queues at toll plazas and making FASTag redundant over time.
๐ What is the ANPR Toll System?
ANPR is a satellite-backed, AI-powered toll collection technology. Special high-resolution cameras installed on highways scan a vehicle’s number plate. The system automatically deducts the toll amount from the vehicle owner's linked bank account or digital wallet—no stopping, no manual scanning required.
This technology is already operational in parts of the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and now it's India’s turn to go fully digital.
๐ฏ What is the Government’s Goal?
According to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari,
“The ANPR toll system will ensure faster, more transparent, and hassle-free toll collection. It will save both time and fuel, and bring about a unified tolling system across the country.”
