Pappu Yadav Granted Bail in Three Cases, Released After Week in Custody

Purnea MP Pappu Yadav walked out of jail on Friday after a local court granted him bail in three separate cases, ending a week in custody that began with his arrest in connection with a decades-old matter. The court directed that he must remain personally present during future hearings, making compliance with proceedings a condition of relief.

Yadav had been detained since February 6, initially over a 31-year-old case in which he secured bail soon after arrest. However, police subsequently added two more cases registered in 2017 and 2019 at a city police station, prolonging his detention. His consolidated bail plea had been under consideration since February 9 and was approved after arguments concluded.

During a courtroom appearance earlier in the proceedings, Yadav, seated in a wheelchair, told the judge he was suffering from significant medical discomfort due to a prostate condition. The court instructed jail authorities to ensure proper treatment and adequate medical facilities while he remained in custody. After his release order, Yadav briefly addressed supporters, invoking the phrase “Satyamev Jayate” before leaving the premises.

The cases against him stem partly from a January incident in which supporters allegedly obstructed police officers attempting to execute an arrest warrant, leading to charges of interfering with official duties. Another case relates to a protest staged under the banner of the Jan Adhikar Party against electricity tariff hikes and an examination paper leak, during which a road blockade was reported.

Through his legal counsel, Yadav questioned why older cases had resurfaced simultaneously in 2026, suggesting the timing indicated an attempt to silence his public advocacy. In a letter addressed to Nitish Kumar and senior officials in Bihar, he expressed concern about what he described as a shift in administrative functioning and asked who was effectively directing governance.

Political reactions followed swiftly. Digvijaya Singh described the arrest as politically motivated and said he had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking intervention and a review of the circumstances. Authorities have not publicly responded to those allegations.

Legal experts note that while bail provides temporary relief, the cases remain active and will proceed through trial unless withdrawn or dismissed. Yadav’s compliance with court conditions and attendance at scheduled hearings will be crucial in determining whether he retains bail privileges as proceedings continue.
