PM Modi Claims BJP as ‘First Choice’ of People, Criticises Congress for Losing Public Trust

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become the first choice of voters across India, attributing this to the party’s focus on good governance and development. Addressing a public gathering in Assam, he added that citizens are repeatedly rejecting the Congress, which he said has lost the people’s trust.
“People want good governance and development. In Maharashtra, where Congress was in power for many years, it has now been defeated,” Modi stated, highlighting the party’s perceived decline in traditional strongholds.
The Prime Minister was in Kaliabor, Assam, to lay the foundation stone of the ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion and protecting wildlife around the UNESCO World Heritage site. He emphasised that such infrastructure projects reflect the government’s commitment to both development and environmental conservation.
Modi also virtually inaugurated two Amrit Bharat Express trains — the Dibrugarh–Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) and Kamakhya–Rohtak services — reinforcing the government’s focus on expanding national railway connectivity.
After his Assam engagements, Modi is scheduled to visit West Bengal in the afternoon. At Singur’s Balagarh, he will inaugurate the extended port gate system and several other development initiatives worth ₹830 crore, including projects aimed at improving railway connectivity in the region. He will conclude the visit with a public rally at 3:45 PM, addressing key supporters and party workers.
Political analysts note that Modi’s remarks underscore the BJP’s effort to consolidate support in the northeast while portraying the Congress as out of touch with public expectations. The visit also signals the government’s continued emphasis on infrastructure and connectivity projects as visible markers of development in key states ahead of upcoming elections.
The elevated corridor near Kaziranga National Park is expected to reduce vehicle-human-wildlife conflicts, while the railway expansions aim to enhance trade, tourism, and mobility across Assam and neighbouring states.
The Prime Minister’s statements and inaugurations in Assam and West Bengal form part of a broader strategy to highlight administrative efficiency and developmental achievements, positioning the BJP as the preferred choice of the electorate nationwide.
