PM Modi to Flag Off India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on Guwahati–Kolkata Route

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Class train on the Guwahati–Kolkata route later this month, marking a significant expansion of the country’s semi-high-speed rail network into long-distance overnight travel. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that the launch is expected within the next 15 to 20 days, most likely on January 18 or 19, with the official date to be confirmed shortly.

The announcement follows the completion of all mandatory testing and certification processes for the new sleeper trainset. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper represents a major milestone for Indian Railways, responding to sustained public demand for modern, comfortable long-distance trains.

“For a long time, there has been a demand for next-generation trains. The Vande Bharat chair car ushered in a new era, and now the sleeper version will extend that experience to overnight journeys,” the minister said.

According to the Railways, the Guwahati–Kolkata corridor has been selected as the inaugural route considering passenger demand and connectivity needs in the eastern and northeastern regions. The train is expected to significantly reduce travel fatigue on the busy intercity sector while offering a higher standard of comfort and safety.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is equipped with advanced safety systems, improved suspension, energy-efficient traction motors, and a streamlined aerodynamic design. Passenger-focused upgrades include enhanced sleeping berths, modern washrooms, improved lighting, and better noise insulation, aimed at making overnight travel smoother and more reliable.

In a departure from conventional onboard services, the Railways plan to incorporate regional culinary elements into catering. Passengers boarding from Guwahati will be served Assamese cuisine, while those beginning their journey from Kolkata will be offered Bengali dishes, reflecting local hospitality and culture during the journey.

Fares for the new service have also been announced. A one-way journey between Guwahati and Kolkata will cost ₹2,300 for AC 3-tier, ₹3,000 for AC 2-tier, and ₹3,600 for AC first class. Officials said the pricing has been kept competitive with existing premium trains, considering the upgraded facilities on offer.

The launch of the sleeper variant is expected to pave the way for similar services on other long-distance routes across the country, as Indian Railways continues to modernise its fleet and improve passenger experience.
