Priyanka Gandhi Backs Gaurav Gogoi, Accuses Himanta Biswa Sarma of Fear Ahead of Polls

Senior Indian National Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Friday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of resorting to personal attacks out of “fear of elections,” condemning allegations targeting Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his family over alleged foreign links. She said such tactics reflect “wrong politics” and distract from substantive issues facing voters in Assam.

Addressing reporters during the second day of her state visit, Gandhi said political discourse should centre on governance and development rather than personal accusations. “The way Gaurav ji and his family are being targeted shows this is not healthy politics. People of Assam understand what is happening,” she said, adding that the opposition appeared confident ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.

Her remarks come amid an intensifying political exchange between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress in the run-up to elections, with both sides escalating rhetoric. Gandhi questioned the state government’s performance, asking what tangible progress had been achieved in employment generation, infrastructure, and long-term welfare. She argued that pre-election financial assistance schemes for women cannot substitute for sustained economic security.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi visited Sonapur’s Jubin area to pay tribute to late Assamese singer Jubin Garg before interacting with local residents and party workers. Congress leaders said the visit was intended to gauge public sentiment and strengthen organisational outreach before the polls.

Responding to criticism that Sarma was not made Chief Minister during his earlier stint in Congress, Gandhi remarked that leadership decisions depend on multiple factors, adding that prolonged public complaints about such matters “speak for themselves.” The comment drew swift reactions from ruling party leaders, who accused the Congress of deflecting from policy questions.

During the visit, state Congress officials released a 20-point charge sheet against the Assam government alleging mismanagement, inadequate job creation, and misuse of public resources. Gogoi said the document reflects concerns raised by citizens across districts and signals the party’s readiness for the electoral contest.

Political analysts note that the sharpening exchanges indicate an early campaign phase marked by aggressive positioning from both camps. With elections approaching, observers expect intensified messaging, targeted outreach, and heightened scrutiny of claims from rival parties.
