ABVP’s Ankit Bidhan wins the Punjab University student council president post with 3,149 votes, defeating AAP-backed Adil Brar by 512 votes.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has secured a major victory in the Punjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) election, with its candidate Ankit Bidhan winning the president’s post.
Bidhan secured 3,149 votes to defeat Aam Aadmi Party-backed Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) candidate Adil Brar by 512 votes. The result marks ABVP’s second consecutive victory in the university’s president election.
ABVP Retains Top Post
Ankit Bidhan emerged victorious in the PUCSC election held on August 31, retaining the president’s position for ABVP.
Bidhan received 3,149 votes, while Adil Brar finished second with 2,637 votes. NSUI candidate Gurman Singh Sidhu secured 2,263 votes and SATH candidate Darshpreet Singh received 1,387 votes.
The result confirmed ABVP’s continued hold over the top student leadership position at Punjab University.
Bidhan Wins By 512 Votes
The presidential contest witnessed a four-way fight among candidates backed by different student organisations.
Bidhan maintained a lead over Brar during the final count and eventually won by a margin of 512 votes.
The election saw thousands of students participate in voting for the university’s student council, with the results announced after counting on Monday evening.
SOI Backed ABVP Candidate
ABVP’s campaign received an important boost before polling when the Student Organisation of India (SOI), the student wing associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal, extended its support to Bidhan.
SOI decided not to field its own candidate for the president’s post and backed the ABVP nominee.
The alliance was seen as an important factor in the electoral contest and added to the political significance of the student election.
Other PUCSC Results
The election also decided the university’s other major student council positions.
Vice-President: Armaan Singh Bhinder won with 3,322 votes, defeating Akanksha Thakur.
Secretary: Dhyan Singh secured the secretary’s post with 4,045 votes. Aryan Saharan finished second with 3,678 votes.
Joint Secretary: Vishal Bamal won with 3,506 votes, while Dev Raj Singh Nain received 2,338 votes.
The results give the newly elected student representatives a mandate for the 2026-27 academic session.
Major Student Issues
The election campaign focused on several issues concerning students and campus life.
Hostel facilities, fee-related concerns, student welfare, campus security and issues involving university administration featured prominently during the campaign.
Different student organisations also attempted to connect broader political and social issues with the concerns faced by students on campus.
The contest consequently became an important event in Punjab University’s student political calendar.
ABVP Wins Second Time
The victory is particularly significant for ABVP because it has now won the PUCSC president’s post for the second consecutive year.
The organisation had secured the top position in the previous election and successfully defended it this year despite competition from multiple student groups.
The result strengthens ABVP’s position in Punjab University’s student politics and gives the organisation another term to lead the student council.
Political Significance Grows
Punjab University student elections often attract attention beyond the campus because several major political parties maintain links with student organisations.
The latest result comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election, adding to interest around the performance of student groups backed by political organisations.
However, student election results cannot directly be treated as a prediction of assembly election outcomes.
For ABVP, the immediate significance is clear: Ankit Bidhan’s victory has retained the president’s post for the organisation and reinforced its presence in Punjab University student politics.
