Rekha Govt Approves 100 Atal Canteens in Delhi
New Delhi
Delhiites will soon be able to enjoy a wholesome meal of roti, sabzi, dal, and rice for just ₹5 as the Rekha government approves the opening of 100 Atal Canteens across the city to provide affordable food to the masses.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has taken an important step towards fulfilling its election promises. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has started the process of opening Atal Canteen in Delhi. Under this scheme, a nine-member committee has been formed to set up 100 Atal canteens in Delhi, which will take forward the work of opening the canteen.
People in Delhi will now be able to have a full meal once for just five rupees, as things like roti, vegetable, dal and rice will be served in the canteen here. The Delhi government is planning to set up 100 Atal canteens in the capital.
Cheap and nutritious food
The aim of Atal canteen is to provide cheap and nutritious food to the poor, laborers, rickshaw pullers, daily wage workers, students and the needy. This canteen is being set up in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Its inauguration is planned around Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, 17 September 2025.
Food will be available for 5 rupees
Under the Atal Canteen Scheme of the Delhi Government, canteens will be opened near slum areas, construction sites, bus stands and markets of the capital, making it easier for the needy people to get food. The main objective of this scheme is to provide food at a low price, in which rice, dal, vegetables and roti have been claimed to be available for only 5 rupees. This initiative is inspired by the Atal Kisan-Mazdoor Canteen of Haryana and Amma Canteen of Tamil Nadu.
2-time meals will be available
This scheme is going to be implemented on a large scale for the first time in the capital, for which the government has made a provision of Rs 100 crore in the budget of 2025-26. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said in reference to this scheme that its objective is to meet the basic needs of the people living below the poverty line.
Inauguration of roti making machine
These canteens will be operated in collaboration with self-help groups and NGOs, where breakfast and lunch will be available for daily wage labourers and students. On the occasion of inauguration of an automatic roti making machine in Shalimar Bagh, the Chief Minister said that these machines will be helpful in preparing food in the canteens.
