Report on India’s achievements: 4 lakh child marriages prevented in 2 years

India has achieved a major milestone in preventing child marriages. Since 2023, 4 lakh child marriages have been prevented. This is the highest number since the enactment of the child marriage prevention law. Child marriages decreased by 69% in 3 years.

According to the report 'Tipping Point to Zero: Evidence towards a Child Marriage Free India' by Just Rights for Children, released during a program at the United Nations General Assembly.

In 2023, the UN Secretary General had said that at this pace, it would take 300 years to end this evil practice. One-third of the world's child marriages occur in India.

In the year 2023-24, approximately 73,501 child marriages were prevented through civil society, panchayats, and legal interventions. Of these, about 59,364 were prevented with the help of panchayats and around 14,137 through legal action.

The rate of child marriage in the country has shown periodic decline. For example, according to UNICEF and other organizations, the rate decreased by approximately 1% per year from 1990 to around 2005, and in the last decade, this decline has occurred at a rate of about 2% per year.

According to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) report, there are more than 11.5 lakh children in 27 states and 7 union territories of India who are at high risk of child marriage. Among these, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, in 2022, 3,563 child marriage cases were listed in courts under the "Prohibition of Child Marriage Act," but prosecution was completed in only 181 cases.

·         63% people very comfortable reporting child marriage.

·         33% feel somewhat comfortable.

In 2023, 257 such districts were selected where child marriage rate was more than 23%. 270 organizations were joined together. Each organization was given responsibility to prevent just 6 marriages by selecting 50 villages in one district. Their proofs were uploaded on the portal. By September 25, this number had reached 4,00,742, Said by Bhuwan Ribhu, founder of Just Rights for Children.
