Officials said the matter was being reviewed, reiterating that national monuments fall under strict regulatory norms during public events.
In Bihar, a brief moment of controversy occurred at the BJP state office in Patna when state party president Sanjay Sarawgi arrived to hoist the tricolour wearing footwear. Those present objected, following which he removed his shoes before proceeding with the ceremony. Party leaders later said the issue was resolved immediately and did not disrupt the celebrations.
A tragic incident was reported from Maharashtra’s Umarga town, where a sub-inspector collapsed during the Republic Day समारोह and later died of a heart attack. The officer, identified as Mohan Jadhav of the State Excise Department, was standing in formation with other personnel to salute the national flag when he suddenly fell. He sustained a head injury and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident was captured on camera, prompting condolences from senior officials and colleagues.
Across the country, Republic Day events highlighted both ceremonial pride and regional significance. In Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, residents of Gogunda village witnessed the hoisting of the tricolour for the first time since the establishment of a CRPF camp in the area, once known as a stronghold of left-wing extremism. Locals described the moment as symbolic of restored security and development.
In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unfurled the national flag in Dibrugarh, where flower petals were showered from a helicopter as part of the celebrations. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Governor attended the parade at Kolkata’s Red Road, continuing the state’s long-standing Republic Day tradition.
Several political leaders marked the day at different locations. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla hoisted the flag at his residence in New Delhi, while Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav unfurled the tricolour in Lucknow. Chief ministers in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and other states also presided over official functions.
Despite isolated incidents, officials said Republic Day celebrations across the country largely reflected unity, discipline and respect for constitutional values.
