Republic Day Event in Nashik Sparks Row Over Ambedkar Omission; Police Probe Underway

A controversy erupted during a Republic Day programme in Nashik after Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan allegedly omitted the name of Dr B.R. Ambedkar while referring to the Constitution in his address, triggering protests by two forest department employees and drawing sharp political reactions. The incident has prompted a police inquiry and intensified social and political debate across the district.

The disruption occurred during the official Republic Day समारोह when forest department employees Madhavi Jadhav and Darshana Saupure objected publicly to Mahajan’s speech, alleging that the omission amounted to disrespect toward the chief architect of the Constitution. Their protest caused brief confusion at the venue, after which police intervened to restore order.

Both employees were taken to Sarkarwada Police Station for questioning. Soon after, citizens and activists gathered outside the station, raising slogans and demanding action against the minister. Jadhav later submitted a written complaint, seeking registration of a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police officials confirmed that the complaint is under examination and that statements from all parties are being recorded.

The incident has drawn reactions from political leaders and social organisations. Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi leader Prakash Ambedkar spoke to Jadhav over the phone and criticised Mahajan, calling the alleged omission an insult to Dr Ambedkar’s legacy. He urged authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure accountability. Several organisations have publicly extended support to the protesting employees, describing their action as a defence of constitutional values.

Responding to the allegations, Mahajan said he holds Dr Ambedkar in the highest regard and regularly participates in Ambedkar Jayanti events. He stated that the omission, if any, was unintentional and expressed regret for the misunderstanding. However, he questioned the demand for invoking the Atrocity Act, asserting that there was no intent to insult or discriminate.

Madhavi Jadhav, a forest guard posted in Sinnar taluka since 2011, defended her protest, saying that overlooking Dr Ambedkar’s contribution during a Republic Day address was unacceptable. She maintained that her action was driven by self-respect and commitment to constitutional ideals, and said she would not apologise for raising the issue.

Political observers note that the episode has expanded beyond a single event, reflecting deeper sensitivities around symbolism, representation, and constitutional legacy. With the police inquiry underway, attention is now on how the administration addresses the complaint and whether legal action follows. The outcome is expected to have wider implications for political discourse and official conduct at public events.
