Delhi Police detained businessman Sameer Modi, younger brother of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, upon his return from a Europe trip on Thursday evening. A woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) on September 10 at New Friends Colony police station, accusing Sameer Modi of rape, blackmail, and cheating since 2019. A Look-Out Circular (LOC) ensured his immediate arrest at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to the FIR, Sameer Modi lured the complainant with promises of a career in fashion and lifestyle. In December 2019, he allegedly summoned her to his New Friends Colony residence and assaulted her. The woman claims that Sameer repeatedly raped and blackmailed her with false assurances of marriage, despite his marital status. She further alleges that he and his associates threatened to kill her and her family if she spoke out, exploiting his influence to maintain her silence.
A Delhi court granted one-day police custody for Sameer Modi, who has denied the accusations. Advocate Simran Singh, representing Sameer, described the FIR as “based on false and fabricated facts” aimed at extortion. Sameer’s legal team asserts that WhatsApp chats reveal a consensual relationship, with the complainant demanding Rs.50 crore. They contend that Delhi Police rushed the arrest without thorough verification and have filed counter-FIRs alleging extortion on August 8 and 13.
Sameer Modi serves as Managing Director of Modi Enterprises and founded Colorbar Cosmetics and Modi Care Foundation. He is embroiled in a high-profile dispute with his mother, Bina Modi, over his late father K.K. Modi’s Rs.11,000 crore property. His siblings include fugitive IPL founder Lalit Modi and Charu Modi.
Lalit Modi, notorious for IPL auction irregularities and alleged money laundering, fled India in 2010 after the BCCI suspended him. His personal wealth is estimated at Rs.4,500 crore, and Modi Enterprises is valued around Rs.12,000 crore, with interests spanning tobacco, retail, education, and entertainment.
