New Delhi, 5 hours ago – The Supreme Court will hear the case on lifting the permanent firecracker ban in Delhi-NCR today. The Centre requested more time on Wednesday, stating it would submit a report after consulting all stakeholders.
On September 26, the court had permitted the manufacturing of NEERI- and PESO-certified green crackers but barred their sale in the NCR without prior approval. A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran is hearing the matter. Firecracker manufacturers, represented by lawyer Balbir Singh, sought a hearing before Diwali.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta requested relaxation for green crackers, emphasizing Diwali’s cultural importance. The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to consult all parties and propose a practical solution.
Earlier rulings include:
- September 12: The court suggested a nationwide ban on firecrackers to ensure clean air across India.
- April 3, 2025: The firecracker ban in Delhi-NCR was extended year-round, instead of only in winter, due to public health concerns.
- GRAP-1 Implementation: Following AQI crossing 200 on October 14, restrictions were imposed on coal/firewood usage in hotels/restaurants, monitoring of old petrol/diesel vehicles, and anti-smog measures in construction and road work.
The AQI, which measures air pollutants like CO, Ozone, NO2, PM2.5, and PM10 on a scale of 0–500, has risen above 300 in several cities of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, signaling serious health risks.
