SC to Hear Plea Against Ethanol-Rich Petrol
National
The Supreme Court may hear today a petition challenging ethanol-rich petrol, which includes several key demands.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the addition of 20% ethanol to petrol. The petitioner has expressed apprehension of damage to vehicles due to ethanol-blended petrol and has demanded that ethanol-free fuel be made available at all petrol pumps. The petition also states that fuel with high ethanol is causing engine degradation and decline in fuel efficiency.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the government's plan to add 20 percent ethanol to petrol. The petition alleges that ethanol-blended petrol (EBP-20) may deliberately deprive millions of vehicles of their suitable fuel.
Demand for nationwide impact study
Along with this, the petition also demands a nationwide study of the impact of the use of 20 percent ethanol-blended petrol on non-compliant vehicles and their mechanical degradation. The petition states that millions of vehicle owners have been left helpless at the pumps and are being forcibly forced to buy fuel which their vehicle cannot bear.
Vehicles manufactured before 2023 and some BS-6 models are also not compatible with high ethanol fuel. The petition also sought directions that people going to the pumps to refuel their vehicles should be warned about this fuel first so that people can avoid filling fuel that is harmful to their vehicle.
Ethanol free fuel in America and Europe
The petition claimed that high ethanol fuel is causing engine corrosion, drop in fuel efficiency and increase in repair costs, while insurance companies are rejecting claims for damage caused by ethanol-containing fuel.
The petition also said that ethanol-free fuel is provided in America and Europe and it is clearly written on petrol pumps how much ethanol has been mixed in the fuel. Whereas there is nothing like this in India.
