SC Warns Rahul Gandhi: Don’t Mock Freedom Fighters Over Savarkar Remarks

On April 25, 2025, the Supreme Court of India issued a stern warning to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding his past remarks about freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. While the Court stayed the criminal defamation proceedings initiated by a Lucknow court,

The Supreme Court has warned Rahul Gandhi about his objectionable remarks on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. On Friday, the court reminded the Congress leader that persons like Veer Savarkar gave us independence and such behavior towards them is not appropriate. The court advised Rahul Gandhi to avoid such comments in future, otherwise it may take suo motu cognizance. Apart from this, the bench also asked Rahul Gandhi's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi whether Rahul Gandhi is aware that Mahatma Gandhi also called himself 'your faithful servant' in talks with the British.

The apex court has clarified that Rahul Gandhi's remarks about Veer Savarkar were irresponsible and he should not have said so. However, the court has also provided him some relief in this matter. The bench has stayed the Allahabad High Court's decision, which refused to quash the summons issued against Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case regarding his remarks on Savarkar. Along with this, the Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government in this matter. Rahul Gandhi had made a controversial statement on Savarkar during a rally.

Pahalgam attack terrorist Adil's mother demanded from the security forces, 'If Adil is involved in this incident, then he should be…'

The court said that Mahatma Gandhi also presented himself as a 'loyal servant' while negotiating with the British. The case started in 2022, when Rahul Gandhi made controversial remarks on Veer Savarkar at a rally in Akola, Maharashtra during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Showing a letter, he said that Savarkar had expressed loyalty to the British and also apologized out of fear. In contrast, Gandhi and Nehru did not do so, due to which they remained in jail for a long time. After this comment, an advocate filed a case against Rahul Gandhi, but the court admonished him with historical facts during the hearing.
