Severe winter likely to be delayed this year: IMD predicts cooler days but warmer nights in November

The onset of severe winter across India may be delayed this year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said during an online briefing on Friday that daytime temperatures are likely to stay below normal in most regions through November, while nights will feel relatively warmer than usual.

Meteorologists attribute this trend to the delayed impact of the La Niña phenomenon. However, some areas — including the western Himalayan region, Himalayan foothills, parts of northeast India, and southern peninsular regions — may experience above-normal daytime temperatures. Minimum temperatures at night are also expected to remain higher than average.

The IMD noted that a weak La Niña currently persists over the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, a pattern that could continue from December 2025 to February 2026. La Niña typically brings cooler-than-normal ocean temperatures, which influence global weather patterns.

Rainfall forecast for November

The IMD expects normal to above-normal rainfall in most parts of the country this month. However, northwest India and parts of the southern peninsula may see below-normal precipitation.

Mahapatra added that October rainfall averaged 112.1 mm nationwide — 49% above normal, marking the second-highest October rainfall since 2001. The IMD had earlier forecast above-normal rainfall for the October–December period.

State-wise weather outlook

Madhya Pradesh: Heavy October rain, similar trend in November

Madhya Pradesh recorded 2.8 inches of rain in October, 121% higher than the normal 1.3 inches, with Indore alone receiving 3.4 inches — its second-highest October rainfall in a decade. The state is expected to witness rain accompanied by mild cold in early November, with a heavy rain alert issued for the first week.

Rajasthan: Dry spell for now, rain expected later in November

Fog covered several districts including Udaipur, Sriganganagar, and Sikar on Friday. Over the next 2–3 days, dry weather is expected in Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Bharatpur divisions, with daytime temperatures rising slightly. Partial cloud cover may persist in Udaipur and Kota divisions. The IMD predicts above-normal rainfall later this month, while nighttime chill will remain near normal levels.

Bihar: Cyclone Montha brings heavy rain, alerts issued

The impact of Cyclone Montha has triggered heavy rainfall in Patna and nearby districts. The IMD has issued alerts for 26 districts, including orange alerts for 7 and yellow alerts for 19, warning of winds up to 40 km/h and lightning. Conditions are expected to improve by November 2.

Himachal Pradesh: Rain and snow forecast for November 4–5

The state is likely to see fog and cloud cover on Saturday, followed by rain and snowfall on November 4–5. Light snowfall may occur at higher altitudes on the 4th, while the 5th may bring widespread precipitation. Afterward, temperatures will dip further, with 10 cities already below 10°C.

Punjab: Showers on November 5–6, relief from pollution expected

Dense fog blanketed Amritsar’s rural areas on Saturday morning. The IMD forecasts rain across Punjab on November 5–6, bringing some relief from air pollution. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in several regions, with daytime temperatures gradually falling even as nights remain comparatively warm.
