Sonam Wangchuk’s Health Deteriorates in Jodhpur Jail; Taken to AIIMS for Emergency Check-up

Activist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk, currently in Jodhpur Central Jail, was rushed to AIIMS Jodhpur on Saturday morning after his health reportedly worsened. Police officials brought him to the hospital under strict security, where he was examined in the emergency ward by a gastroenterologist. Wangchuk had also undergone a medical check-up at AIIMS on Friday.

According to hospital sources, Wangchuk was suffering from stomach-related issues and complained of body pain in multiple areas. Officials believe that the water available at Jodhpur Central Jail may have contributed to his digestive problems, impacting his overall health.

The police brought Wangchuk to AIIMS via the rear entrance at approximately 6:30 am to avoid the main hospital crowd. From there, he was taken directly to the outpatient department (OPD) for medical examination. After spending around 1.5 hours at the hospital, he was returned to the jail under tight security protocols.

Wangchuk, widely known for his work in sustainable architecture and educational reform in Ladakh, has been in custody for four months. His arrest and ongoing detention have drawn widespread attention, with several civil society groups expressing concern over his health and the conditions of his confinement.

The AIIMS emergency examination focused primarily on gastrointestinal concerns, though Wangchuk had also reported pain in other parts of his body. Medical personnel at AIIMS stated that he was evaluated thoroughly before being sent back to the jail. No detailed report on his condition has yet been released publicly.

Security measures during the hospital visit were extensive. Police ensured minimal public exposure and escorted Wangchuk directly to the examination area, emphasizing precautionary measures due to the high-profile nature of the detainee.

Wangchuk’s deteriorating health raises questions about the adequacy of medical facilities and sanitation standards in Jodhpur Central Jail. Activists and legal experts have called for continued monitoring and access to timely medical care for inmates, especially high-profile detainees facing extended custody periods.

This incident marks the second consecutive day Wangchuk required hospital evaluation, highlighting concerns over his wellbeing amid incarceration. Authorities have confirmed that he will continue to receive medical oversight while in custody.
