Stampede at Goa’s Lairai Devi Temple: 7 Dead
A tragic stampede at Lairai Devi temple in Goa claimed 7 lives and left over 40 injured during a crowded religious event. Rescue operations are underway.
A tragic incident took place during Shri Lairai 'Jatra' in Shirgaon, Goa on Friday night, in which 7 people lost their lives and more than 40 people were seriously injured due to a stampede at the Lairai temple. The injured were immediately admitted to the hospital. The accident happened when panic suddenly spread among the huge crowd, due to which people started running here and there to save their lives. According to eyewitnesses, the situation became very frightening during the stampede, and people were trying to get out by falling over each other.
As soon as the incident was reported, police and emergency services immediately reached the spot and relief and rescue operations were started. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
The authorities have not officially confirmed the reasons for the stampede, but according to initial reports, the incident occurred due to excessive crowd and lack of proper management. More information related to the incident is awaited. Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the hospital to know the condition of the injured.

Many interesting stories are prevalent about Shrigaon in Goa. Due to the temple of Lairai Devi located here, consumption of alcohol and eggs is prohibited, and killing of any animal is prohibited. Entry of horses is also prohibited in this village. Every year a large number of devotees come here to visit Lairai Devi.
Lairai Devi is worshipped especially in Goa, where Shirgaon Jatra is organized every year. The jatra is held for several days in the month of Chaitra, in which devotees walk barefoot on burning embers and bathe in a sacred lake. People observe fasts and worship on the occasion, and a grand procession of the goddess is taken out from the temple.
1000 policemen were deployed at the temple
The stampede took place during the Shri Devi Lairai Yatra, which began on Friday and was attended by thousands of devotees. Around 1000 policemen were deployed to secure the yatra, and the administration had made full preparations. Drones were also used to monitor the crowd movements. Earlier, Chief Minister Sawant, his wife Sulakshana, Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, MLAs Premendra Shet and Carlos Ferreira had visited the yatra.
