On April 17, the Supreme Court indicated that it is considering a stay on some provisions of the controversial Waqf Act, 2025. These include the principle of 'Waqf-by-user', representation of non-Muslims in Waqf boards, and powers given to the Collector to change the status of disputed Waqf land.
Former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna said that usually we do not stay any law unless there are exceptional circumstances, and this case seems to be an exception. He expressed concern that if 'Waqf-by-User' is de-notified, it could have serious consequences. Justices PV Sanjay Kumar and KV Vishwanathan were also present in this hearing.
