Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Begins UK Visit to Attract Investments

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has embarked on a week-long official visit to the United Kingdom to attract fresh investments to the state and explore global best practices in motor-sports infrastructure.

The visit, which began on September 10, comes shortly after Tamil Nadu announced plans to establish a world-class Motor Sports City. During his UK tour, Vijay is scheduled to visit the iconic Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit to study its track design, safety systems and commercial operations.

The delegation is also expected to meet business leaders and potential investors across sectors including advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, electronics and Global Capability Centres.

Vijay Begins Week-Long UK Tour

Vijay left Chennai on September 10 with a high-level delegation that includes Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu member-secretary Meghnath Reddy and senior officials from the state's Guidance investment promotion agency.

The delegation is scheduled to return to Chennai on September 17.

The government has positioned the trip as part of its effort to expand Tamil Nadu's international investment outreach and create more high-value employment opportunities.

Focus on Fresh Industrial Investments

A major objective of the visit is to attract new investments from British and European companies.

Tamil Nadu has already reported investment commitments exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore during the first 100 days of the Vijay government. An investors' conclave held in Chennai in August resulted in 97 MoUs worth Rs 67,452 crore, according to state government figures.

The UK visit is expected to build on that momentum by engaging global companies in sectors where Tamil Nadu has established industrial capabilities.

Silverstone Study Linked to Motor Sports City

One of the most closely watched parts of Vijay's itinerary is the planned visit to Silverstone, one of the world's best-known motor-racing circuits.

Tamil Nadu officials said the visit will allow the delegation to examine circuit design, safety arrangements and the operational and commercial models used to run a major motorsports facility.

The study is intended to provide inputs for Tamil Nadu's own proposed Motor Sports City.

Tamil Nadu Plans World-Class Racing Hub

Vijay announced the Motor Sports City project in the state Assembly under Rule 110 on September 3.

The proposed facility is expected to include an international-standard racing track, modern infrastructure and training facilities capable of hosting Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events.

The government says the project will promote sports tourism, identify young racing talent and provide structured training and competition opportunities.

The exact location of the proposed Motor Sports City has not yet been officially announced.

Automobile and EV Ecosystem a Key Advantage

Tamil Nadu already has one of India's strongest automobile manufacturing ecosystems, with major vehicle manufacturers and a large network of ancillary industries.

The state also has established motorsport facilities, including the Madras International Circuit near Chennai and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, which host racing events.

The proposed Motor Sports City is expected to build on this existing industrial base and create opportunities in specialised vehicle manufacturing, engineering, training and sports tourism.

Investment and Motorsport Opportunities Converge

The UK visit brings together two priorities of Tamil Nadu's industrial strategy: attracting international capital and developing new sports infrastructure.

Officials are also exploring opportunities connected to specialised automotive research, sports tourism and partnerships in the motorsport sector. The Silverstone visit is expected to provide practical insights into how a major racing facility combines sporting events with commercial activity.

The visit also comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is seeking to take advantage of stronger India-UK economic ties and expand its engagement with European businesses.

Tamil Nadu Eyes Global Motorsport Position

The proposed Motor Sports City is intended to move Tamil Nadu beyond its established reputation as an automobile manufacturing hub and strengthen its position as a global motorsport destination.

The government hopes the project can create a pipeline of trained racing talent while generating employment and attracting investment linked to high-performance vehicles and specialised engineering.

Vijay's Silverstone visit will therefore be closely watched as the state works to translate its Motor Sports City announcement into a detailed infrastructure and investment plan.
