Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Thalapathy Vijay slipped and fell briefly at Chennai Airport on Sunday night as enthusiastic fans swarmed him upon his return from Malaysia.
Security personnel swiftly helped the star to his feet and escorted him into his car. Vijay appeared unhurt, but a video of the incident spread rapidly across social media platforms. The frenzy erupted as Vijay exited the terminal after attending the audio launch of his upcoming film, Jana Nayagan, in Kuala Lumpur.
Fans had gathered in large numbers outside the airport, eager for a glimpse of the superstar. Despite heavy security, the crowd pushed forward, creating chaos that led to the slip. Airport authorities managed the situation, ensuring Vijay's safe departure.
Just two days earlier, on December 27, Vijay drew an estimated one lakh people to Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur for the Jana Nayagan audio launch. The event earned a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest attendance at a film audio launch in the country.
During his speech, Vijay announced his intention to retire from acting after this film to focus on politics. “When I entered cinema, I felt like I was building a small sandcastle. But you built a palace for me. You built a fortress for me,” he told the crowd. “For the fans who gave me everything, I am now stepping away from cinema.”
The actor, who launched TVK earlier this year, has increasingly shifted toward public life. Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, marks Vijay's final cinematic outing and is slated for a Pongal 2026 release. The airport incident underscores the intense adoration Vijay commands, even as he transitions from reel to real-life leadership.
Fans online expressed concern over the mobbing, questioning security arrangements at public venues. Such scenes are common for the star, whose popularity spans decades in Tamil cinema. As Vijay prepares for a full-time political career, events like these highlight the challenges of managing massive public followings.
