Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and another sustained injuries after a fellow jawan allegedly opened fire inside a BSF camp in Malda district, West Bengal, on Wednesday afternoon. According to officials, the accused constable was under court martial proceedings and in BSF custody at the time of the incident. Security personnel quickly overpowered and detained the accused, while police and BSF authorities launched a detailed investigation into the firing.

Firing Inside BSF Camp

The incident occurred at around 3:50 pm at the headquarters of the 119th and 71st Battalions in Baishnabnagar, Malda district.

Officials identified the accused as Constable Shivam Kumar Mishra of the 119th Battalion. He was reportedly under court martial and being kept in BSF custody when the incident took place.

Weapon Allegedly Snatched

According to preliminary findings, the accused allegedly overpowered a sentry and seized the sentry's service rifle.

He then allegedly opened fire towards a nearby barrack, striking three BSF personnel before being restrained by other security personnel present at the camp.

Investigators are examining how the accused managed to gain access to the weapon despite being under custody.

Two Personnel Die

The injured personnel were immediately shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital for emergency treatment.

However, Head Constable Ajay Kumar and Constable Ambadar Suresh, both attached to the 71st Battalion, succumbed to their injuries.

A third injured personnel, Head Constable Bikas Brahma, is undergoing treatment. Officials said his condition is being closely monitored.

Accused Detained

Following the firing, BSF personnel overpowered the accused and took him into custody.

Police have also detained him and initiated legal proceedings under relevant provisions of law. Officials said a detailed investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events.

Probe Underway

Authorities said the exact motive behind the incident has not yet been determined.

Preliminary inputs suggest the accused may have been suffering from mental depression, though officials stressed that no conclusion has been reached. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including his mental condition, the ongoing court martial proceedings and security lapses that may have contributed to the incident.

Security Review Expected

The firing has prompted an internal review of security protocols governing personnel placed under disciplinary custody.

Officials are expected to examine whether existing procedures for guarding personnel facing court martial require further strengthening to prevent similar incidents in the future.
