US Lawyer Seeks Public Release of FDR Data in Ahmedabad Plane Crash, Cites Need for Transparency

Six months after the devastating Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, a prominent US aviation lawyer representing families of the victims has renewed calls for the public release of the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (FDR). Attorney Mike Andrews, who is advocating on behalf of more than 130 families, said the data is essential for ensuring transparency and allowing relatives to determine their legal course.
The Boeing 787-8, bound for London-Gatwick, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM on June 12 and crashed barely two minutes later into a medical hostel complex. The aircraft burst into flames on impact, killing 241 of the 242 passengers and crew, along with 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, survived.
Andrews said the survivor’s testimony suggests a possible electrical malfunction. According to Ramesh, the cabin lights flickered moments before the crash and briefly turned green—an indication that the aircraft may have shifted from its main power supply to a backup system. “This is consistent with serious electrical failure,” Andrews said, adding that previous cases involving the Boeing 787 series have linked electrical issues to water leakage incidents.
Meeting families again in Gujarat, Andrews insisted that releasing the FDR data is crucial for an independent assessment. “Transparency is the families’ most basic right,” he said, urging the Indian authorities to make the information public.
The lawyer has also filed a Freedom of Information Act appeal in the United States, seeking documents from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He believes the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) may have shared portions of its findings with US regulators.
Andrews and his team will continue meeting affected families in Anand, Vadodara, and Mumbai, as legal preparations move into the next phase.
