WB CM Mamata Banerjee slams Home Minister: Says, “Shah will one day become Modi’s Mir Jafar”; accuses him of acting like a caretaker PM; advises Modi not to trust him blindly

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of behaving like a caretaker prime minister and warning Prime Minister Narendra Modi against trusting him too much.

Referring to the recent Durga Puja immersion violence in Cuttack, Odisha, on October 5, Mamata compared Shah to Mir Jafar, a historical figure known for betrayal. She said, “The situation in Cuttack is very disturbing. Communal violence has erupted because of the BJP and Bajrang Dal.”

Criticizing the ruling BJP, Mamata said, “The BJP and Bajrang Dal are harming the country. I’ve seen many governments, but never such an arrogant and dictatorial regime. They must remember that power is temporary — no one remains in power forever.”

She further added, “All this chaos within 15 days — this is Amit Shah’s doing. He acts as though he’s the acting prime minister. The Prime Minister knows everything, but he should not always trust Amit Shah. One day, he’ll become your Mir Jafar.”

Who was Mir Jafar?

Mir Jafar was a Mughal general remembered in Indian history as a symbol of betrayal. During the Battle of Plassey (1757), he conspired with the British East India Company against Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, leading to the Nawab’s defeat. This betrayal paved the way for British rule in India, and in return, the British made Mir Jafar the Nawab of Bengal.

Key Statements by WB CM Mamata Banerjee

  • On PM Modi’s remarks about the Mirik bridge accident, Mamata said: “Bengal is not Gujarat. In 2022, over 130 people died when a bridge collapsed in Morbi, Gujarat.”
  • She added that relief operations in Bengal have been intensified — 500 relief kits containing food and essentials have been distributed, and 1,000 stranded tourists have been safely evacuated using 45 buses.
  • A temporary bridge in Mirik will be constructed within 15 days, while the new bridge will be completed before the next monsoon. Mamata also announced that she would visit flood-hit areas again next week to personally oversee relief efforts.

October 5: Violence during Durga Puja immersion in Odisha

On October 5, clashes broke out between two groups during a Durga Puja immersion procession in Cuttack, injuring at least 25 people. Several individuals from both sides were detained.
The violence reportedly began after locals objected to loud music being played during the procession. Soon, stones and bottles were thrown from rooftops, leading to chaos and multiple injuries.

May 29: Mamata’s earlier remarks on PM Modi

On May 29, while speaking in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee made a controversial comment about Prime Minister Modi, saying, “He talks as if he is the husband of every woman. Why doesn’t he apply sindoor to his own wife?” She later clarified that she was compelled to make the remark after repeated provocations.
