Engineers Day is celebrated every year on 15 September in the country on the birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya. His full name is Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. M Visvesvaraya was awarded the country's highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna Award in 1955.

Civil engineer Visvesvaraya played an important role in the construction of dams, reservoirs and hydropower projects of modern India. He was an expert in disaster management and irrigation techniques.

Who is M Visvesvaraya?

Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was also known as Sir MV across the country. He was born on 15 September 1861 in a Telugu family in Kakballapur taluk in Kolar district of Mysore. His father's name was Srinivas Shastri, who was a Sanskrit scholar and a doctor of Ayurveda.

M. Visvesvaraya was called the father of modern Mysore

Let us tell you that after Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya obtained a degree in civil engineering from Science College, Pune in the year 1883, he immediately got a government job as an assistant engineer. He was the 19th Diwan of Mysore and lived from 1912 to 1918. Due to his work done in Mysore, he is called the father of modern Mysore. He established many factories and educational institutions in collaboration with the Mysore government. M. Visvesvaraya made a major contribution to the construction of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam built in Mandya district. King George V also honoured him with the title of Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire. Dr. Mokshagundam is also known as Bhagiratha of Karnataka. Dr. Mokshagundam died in 1962 at the age of 102.

He prepared a plan to send water from the Indus River to Sakkhar town. He built steel doors which helped in stopping the flow of water from the dam. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya also made a plan to dam the water of two rivers named Musi and Esi. Even today, water supply systems built on his advice are used. Today, the civil engineers of the country take inspiration from him. Engineers Day is also celebrated on 15 September in India's neighbouring countries Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Engineers have a huge contribution in the progress of any country because engineers strengthen the foundation of nation building through roads, buildings and technology.
