Bharat taxi;100% of ride's earnings will go to driver

The country's first cooperative taxi service is starting from December. It has been named 'Bharat Taxi'. Its pilot project with 650 drivers will first start in Delhi in November.

After this, it will expand to other states of the country from next month. By then, 5,000 drivers and women 'Saarthi' (drivers) will join it.

Currently, private companies like Ola-Uber are providing taxi services, but questions regarding safety have often arisen in them. Therefore, the central government is bringing its own supervised taxi service.

Bharat Taxi is the first national cooperative ride-hailing platform, which has been prepared by the Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division. Drivers will also be co-owners in this. For this, an MoU has been signed with Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited in recent days.

What is Bharat Taxi, who will run it?

  • This is a membership-based model, which will be run by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd. It was established in June with a capital of ₹300 crore.
  • This app-based service is part of Digital India. It will have an operating council, with Amul's MD Jayen Mehta as Chairman and NCDC's Deputy Managing Director Rohit Gupta as Vice Chairman.
  • Additionally, there are 8 other members who are associated with various cooperative societies across the country. The first meeting of this board has already taken place on October 16.

What will be the role of Mahila Sarathi (women drivers)? That is, women drivers. In the first phase, 100 women will join. By 2030, their number will be increased to 15,000. Free training and special insurance will be provided from November 15.

How can one avail this service? The Bharat Taxi app will be similar to Ola-Uber, which can be downloaded from app stores in November. The app will be available in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and English.

What will be the benefit for drivers? Drivers will receive 100% of the earnings from each ride. They will only have to pay a daily, weekly, or monthly fee, which will be very nominal.

How will this service progress by 2030?

  • Service in Rajkot, Mumbai, Pune from December to March 2026. There will be 5 thousand drivers. Multi-state operation.
  • Launch in Lucknow, Bhopal, Jaipur between April and December. 15 thousand drivers and 10 thousand vehicles.
  • Pan-India service in 2027-28 in 20 cities with 50 thousand drivers. This will be linked with FASTag.
  • Service will start between 2028-2030 in district headquarters and villages with one lakh drivers.
