International Day of Older Persons: Ensuring Security, Dignity, and Respect in the Lives of Senior Citizens

In Indian culture, the elderly are considered the treasure of knowledge and experience. Carrying this tradition forward, the Madhya Pradesh government has launched several compassionate initiatives to make the lives of senior citizens more secure and dignified.

From Livelihood to Respect

Under the Samagra Social Security Pension Scheme, more than 15.75 lakh senior citizens in the state receive a monthly pension of ₹600. During the fiscal year 2024–25, a total of ₹1,143.53 crore was disbursed through this scheme. This includes over 2.71 lakh destitute and helpless elderly individuals.

Legal Protection

According to the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Rules, 2009, children and guardians are legally obligated to care for their elderly parents. If a senior citizen is neglected, there are provisions for providing justice and relief.

Senior Citizen Helpline and Care Homes

To address the issues faced by the elderly, a 24×7 Senior Citizen Helpline has been established. In Bhopal, a Senior Citizen Home has been built on five acres of land at a cost of ₹24 crore, providing a safe environment for destitute elderly individuals. Additionally, 81 senior citizen ashrams are operational across the state.

Respect and Social Participation

Every year, on October 1, the International Day of Older Persons is celebrated with felicitation ceremonies for senior citizens across the state. The Shatayu Samman is conferred upon individuals who have completed 100 years of age. In 2024, 70 senior citizens were honored with this award.

Government’s Vision

The Madhya Pradesh government is not confined to offering financial support—it also ensures the mental, social, and health-related well-being of the elderly. These initiatives promote security, dignity, and self-reliance among senior citizens while recognizing their invaluable contributions to society.
