Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday described giving smartphones to children as a “crime,” cautioning parents against exposing toddlers to digital devices. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Gorakhpur Festival, the CM warned that unrestricted smartphone use could make children stubborn and prone to depression, urging families to exercise caution.
“Giving a smartphone to a toddler is a crime. Don’t commit this crime,” Yogi said, emphasizing that children’s early exposure to digital screens could have adverse psychological effects. He also advised keeping mobile phones on silent while traveling, citing the rising number of road accidents that destroy families.

The Chief Minister further cautioned against trusting strangers online, highlighting the risks of cyber fraud. “Trying to make quick money through shortcuts could land you in digital trouble,” he added, stressing responsible smartphone usage.

During the event, Yogi took a dig at Lok Sabha MP Ravi Kishan in a light-hearted manner, referencing the actor-politician’s upcoming film with Kalibari Baba. “Don’t copy Ravi Kishan. His film with Kalibari Baba is releasing soon. I would prefer it was shot outside UP, not within the state,” the CM remarked. He also commented on the social media activity of Kalibari Baba, noting the support they reportedly received during visits to Lucknow and Gorakhpur.
Thousands attended the festival’s closing ceremony, which included cultural performances, the presentation of an idol of Lord Ramlalla to the CM, and the release of the Gorakhpur Festival book by Yogi and Ravi Kishan. The event highlighted Gorakhpur’s cultural heritage while drawing attention to public safety and child welfare messages conveyed by the Chief Minister.

The CM’s statements on smartphone use come amid growing national concerns over children’s screen time and the psychological impact of digital devices. Experts have long emphasized the importance of regulating mobile usage among young children to prevent behavioral issues and mental health challenges. Yogi’s comments aim to reinforce parental responsibility while integrating public safety messages into community events.
The Gorakhpur Festival, held annually, showcases the city’s cultural traditions, attracts large crowds, and serves as a platform for public leaders to communicate governance and social guidance messages to the community.
