Preparations have begun across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar for the two-day visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the German Chancellor to Gujarat on January 11 and 12, with authorities stepping up security and logistical arrangements at key venues. The visit is expected to focus on cultural diplomacy and bilateral engagement, with both leaders scheduled to visit the Gandhi Ashram and jointly inaugurate the International Kite Festival at the Sabarmati Riverfront.
Senior police and administrative officials on Thursday conducted inspections at multiple locations, including the Sabarmati Riverfront, Gandhi Ashram and nearby metro stations, to review security measures and crowd management plans. Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, along with Joint Commissioners Neeraj Badgujar and N.N. Chaudhary, and Deputy Commissioners of Police Harshad Patel and Bhavna Patel, assessed preparedness on the ground and issued instructions for coordination among security agencies.

According to the tentative programme, Prime Minister Modi will arrive in Ahmedabad from Rajkot on January 11. The German Chancellor is also scheduled to reach the city the same day and is likely to stay at a hotel in the city’s commercial district. In the evening, the Prime Minister will receive the German leader, after which both dignitaries will visit the Gandhi Ashram, a symbolic stop highlighting India’s historical commitment to peace and non-violence.
On January 12, the Prime Minister and the German Chancellor will jointly inaugurate the Kite Festival at the Sabarmati Riverfront at 8 am. Following the event, the two leaders are slated to travel by metro from the Old High Court Metro Station near the Income Tax office to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, showcasing Ahmedabad’s urban transport infrastructure.
Security and administrative preparations have been intensified in view of the high-profile visit. The state Chief Secretary, along with senior police officials and representatives associated with the Gandhi Ashram Project, visited the ashram on Wednesday to review arrangements and finalise security protocols. Officials said the focus remains on ensuring seamless movement of the dignitaries while maintaining public safety.

In parallel, city beautification efforts are underway along the Prime Minister’s route. Road walls are being repainted, new footpaths are being laid, and heritage zones are being decorated. Large banners have been installed at prominent intersections and near heritage sites, including areas around the Sabarmati Riverfront and central Ahmedabad.
Authorities said further security drills and coordination meetings will be held in the coming days to ensure the smooth conduct of the visit, which is expected to draw significant public and international attention.
